When a new boiler is installed many of our customers have the same questions or concerns hopefully we can provide some of the answers below.
1. Will a combination boiler give me an adequate supply of hot water?
With a combination boiler the hot water is heated instantly and flow rates of hot water of between 9.5 - 16 litres per minute can normally be achieved from a wide range of boilers. If you have a low demand of hot water i.e have an electric shower and do not run baths and only use hot water for washing at sinks the lower flow rate would be adequate. If you have a family home and have higher demands of hot water ie have a mixer shower or run baths it is advisable to install a boiler with a higher flow rate of hot water. With a combination system it is not possible to run 2 mixer showers or a mixer shower and a bath at the same time, however in our experience this does not occur in most properties.
2. Will my system need flushed?
Yes this is a condition of your guarantee with boiler manufacturers. In addition prior to installation if your boiler is still operational we can carry out a pre flush to break down the sludge and aid flushing at the point of installation.
3. Will my radiator valves need replaced?
This will depend on the type and age of valves your existing system has and if we feel it is necessary we will recommended this during our survey. This is the most cost effective time to carry out this work as the system has already been run down for the boiler installation.
4. Will my existing pipework leak or need replaced when changing to a pressurised system.
This is unusual but in some instances it has been found that a compression fitting may leak when it had not been tightened fully and leaks under the higher pressure. If during the installation process a small leak is found we will carry out the repair. With a pressurised system if the pressure on the boiler drops (please note the pressure will also drop when radiators are bled) this can be an indication of a leak.
5. I have a combination boiler and the pressure has dropped.
This is not a fault with the boiler although an error code will often be displayed on the boiler. The pressure can drop if you have bled radiators, if you have a radiator removed for say decorating or if you have a leak. The boiler has a filling loop which allows the pressure to be topped up to 1.5 Bar and operate again. It is important if your pressure is dropping due to a leak that you contact your installer as the inhibitor levels will be reduce in your system meaning it is not adequately protected from corrosion.
